This was an incredibly useful addition to the notes above. Libusb.pkg.tar.gz sane-backends.pkg.tar.gz SANE-Preference-Pane.pkg.tar.gz TWAIN-SANE-Interface.pkg.tar.gz PLUS downloading the TWAINbridge.app got my CanoScan LiDE 70 scanner to work on Yosemite (OS 10.10.5) using a late 2013 MacBook Pro, both in Image Capture and in Photoshop CC 2017. I am so glad not to have to keep relying on my 2003 iBook or 2003 eMac to use this scanner (which was a thing, believe it or not). I was also able to use VueScan to get the scanner to work, but this process saved me from having to purchase that software. Much obliged for posting all this. @Phallanx: Sorry to hear you haven’t gotten your scanner to run yet. As far as I know, there weren’t introduced any SANE-incompatibilities by the release of OSX 10.10.2, so you should be able to your LiDE 30 to work using the SANE drivers.
@Orangepylon: If you are running MacOSX 10.3.3 “Panther”, you shouldn’t bother about using SANE, you can just download the original drivers from Canon: However, if you mistyped and mean you are running OSX 10.10.3 “Yosemite”, Albert just suggested that the trick with LiDE scanners and SANE might be that you also need to install either or both of these: CanoScan Toolbox 4.1.3.0X (MacOSX 10.1 to 10.4) LiDE20 / LiDE30 Scanner Driver 7.0.1.1aX (MacOSX 10.1 to 10.4) Note: if installing that Scanner Driver doesn’t work, use the Uninstaller that can be found at Hope this helps! @Albert: Thanks for the feedback!

Good to hear! Are you telling me that you also have to install the LiDE35 Scanner Driver Ver. 7.7.2.1X (Mac OS X 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)?
I mean the driver that can be downloaded here: That would be an interesting find! (Please report back if this is the case, so I can credit you on this finding.) Or do you mean that you have installed the CanoScan Toolbox Ver.

4.5.1X (Mac OS X 10.2/10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6) scanner-software? I mean the software that can be downloaded here: In that case, I can suggest tow options: 1- see if there’s an option to set the scan size from “US Letter” to “A4” in the preferences 2- try using OSX’s built-in Image Capture software to scan Hope this helps Good Luck! @Hans: Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you yet Did you (re)install TWAINbridge.app as mentioned also?
Did you rule out a hardware problem with your LiDE30 scanner? Does it start up?
Does it work with another Mac or PC? Really strange that others seem to have gotten this to work with the LiDE30 and you can’t Did you try suggestions #7 & #8 also? These were added based on user feedback from the LiDE30 in Mavericks, so I assume they might be needed in Yosemite also Hope this helps Good Luck! @Himanshu: Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you jet. Even though the official HP-scannerdriver officially is only compatible with OSX 10.7 it might still work with OSX 10.10 I would suggest trying that first; you can download it here: If that doesn’t work I would suggest using the SANE-scannerdrivers for OSX 10.10 as described in the original post above. Furthermore, please keep in mind that: – OSX doesn’t support wireless scanning, so even though OSX will de able to connect to the printer of your Multi-Function-Printer (MFP) wirelessly, the scanner of your MFP will not be recognized wirelessly – when using the SANE scanner drivers, the scanner will not show up in OSX under it’s own name, be as “SANE” Hope this helps.
@Himanshu: as stated on the sane-project.org website “This backend isn’t included in SANE because it is included in the HPLIP software.” however, HPLIP is Linux-only, so you should get the OSX-version by Ricardo Fabbri: some additional directions can be found in the “Informal Notes – Using old printers & scanners trough SANE” on this page: hope this helps Please report back if you get this to work, as other people encountering your problem will be happy with your solution ? I don’t think I can give you additional info, as I don’t have your MFP at hand Good Luck! Thank you for everything, but I’m still in a roadblock. I’m running 10.10.3 on a old Imac mid 2007 24″ and trying to restart the communication with a CanoScan LIDE30 and after many download of the different softwares + restarts + unplug & restart + re plug etc, each time I try to find it in the print & scan menu, it doesn’t appear (even if I can find “SANE” in the downloaded softwares) Are the soft compatible? Should I install Sanr in the software section?
What did I do wrong thank you for your help, I’m definitively lost. I have Cannon 30 LIDE scanner and I’m running Mac OS 10.10.5 Yosemite, although I’m putting off downloading 10.11 (El Capitan) for fear of losing the work I put into installing SANE files today. I had success, but extra troubleshooting problems I thought I would share. After installing files above and restarting, my computer located my scanner but when I opened it (from the admin – printer/scanner panel) it gave me a “Waiting for scanner” message, which lasted several minutes. I unplugged and replugged in my scanner USB cord several times, rubbing each time for luck, and finally got it the scanner to open and scan.
Next, I found that when I scanned my image it was distorted/skewed at high angle. The advice in note #5 didn’t work for me. What I did find (and I don’t understand) is that if the resolution was over 100 pdi the image became skewed. At 100 dpi and under the image was fine. Its not ideal, but I will take it for now. If there is something I overlooked I’d love to hear.
Regarding this issue,”if you get an error-message telling you you can’t install this software (these drivers) since the are not from Apple-approved developers” I “control-clicked” on the downloaded files, selected “Open” and that allowed me to open the file without changing other settings. Apple is annoying, huh. I don’t like when things take me more than 5 minutes to fix. Using the instructions here it took me about 30-45 minutes of troubleshooting before I got my scanner up. It was worth the time. Thanks for giving my scanner a longer life and preventing one more electronic item from hitting the dump ?. Thank you Macmanus, “another option that might just work to get SANE drivers to connect with ImageCapture and Photoshop (especially if you have an older CANON scanner) is (re)installing the TWAINbrigde.app that Jan Egil has ready for download” I have a Canon MP210 bought in 2007.
Thanks to finding this article through Google Search, I am able to use it to scan with Image Capture in Yosemite. Your note #9 above, about re-installing Jan Egil’s TWAINbridge is what made it work. (I had tried your SANE ones, but Image Capture only recognised my cheap old reliable printer-scanner after adding twainbridge. I really appreciate your help!
Hi, First, thank you for publishing this! I’m trying to get my LiDE-80 scanner working under 10.8,5. Since the only Canon-provided driver is a PPC one from 2004, it doesn’t worked on post-Rosetta OS X versions (10.6 and above), and since there isn’t a TWAIN driver, Vuescan doesn’t support it either. Someone pointed me to SANE, but after a full day of trying to mix and match the various SANE components (the documentation is very bad, TBH), I didn’t get anywhere — sane-find-scanner never found the device. I was happy to find your guide After removing all signs of SANE from my system, I rebooted and installed using your guide. There was some progress: On one occasion, the scanner was at least found, but SANE claims it’s not configured: ——– largent: gal$ sane-find-scanner -v This is sane-find-scanner from sane-backends 1.0.24 # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner.
If the # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. Searching for SCSI scanners: # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter. Searching for USB scanners: device 0x04a9/0x2214 at 029:007 is not configured found USB scanner (vendor=0x05ac Apple Inc., product=0x821d Bluetooth USB Host Controller) at libusb:029:009 could not fetch string descriptor: Pipe error ——— However, that only worked once, and afterwards, the scanner wasn’t found again. (The USB Vendor/Device IDs it finds, 0x04a9/0x2214, are the correct ones for the LiDE-80, and match OS X’s System Information utility. I have no idea why SANE thinks the Apple Bluetooth controller is a scanner, BTW; the machine is a 2012 non-retina MBP, if that matters). Looking at the SANE docs, the LiDE-80 is listed as having “basic” support, so should work with the internal backends (spefically, sane-genesys).
However, there was no entry for the LiDE-80 it in the SANE prefpane, so I added it manually —— # Canon LiDE 60 usb 0x04a9 0x221c # Canon LiDE 80 usb 0x04a9 0x2214 # Canon 4400F usb 0x04a9 0x2228 —— But still no luck. It looks to me like maybe I should be using a different/later version of the sane-genesys backend, but I don’t have a binary one, and I’d rather avoid setting up a dev environment just for this compiling from source. @wavelet: Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you (yet). Thanks for all the suggestions — I’d missed that you updated the post. Installing TWAINBridge shouldn’t really be relevant, since I’m trying to get this to work on 10.8, which still has a native TWAINBridge app; I tried it anyway, but, unsurprisingly, Jan’s Egil version won’t install on pre-10.10 OS X. I also somehow missed the link ot Alex Schneider’s app, so just tried it, but it won’t detect the scanner (I can’t find any info on the app at all, so don’t know what versions of SANE and/or OS X it’s based on). I did try a full’s day worth of mixing and matching binary SANE components, but that didn’t work, and it’s now clear why: I need the latest version of the backends, but compiled to work with an older version of OS X.
Next, I thought I’d use of the OS X package managers to build the latest backends module from source on my machine with a 10.8 target, but it turns out both MacPorts and Homebrew only have the previous version of the source I’ve contacted Ellert, hopefully he can provide a 10.0.25 backend for OS X 10.8, or otherwise help. I’ll be sure to update here if I’m successful, since your page gives the most readable and complete tutorial I’ve seen by far of how to get SANE working on OS X (-:.
OK, semi-success on another front People always recommend VueScan to get scanners working on OS X. I have been checking its list of supported scanners every couple of years, and it always said the same about mine: Since the LiDE-80 only had a PowerPC driver, and no TWAIN one, it isn’t supported by VueScan in 10.7 Lion and later OS X versions. VueScan list hasn’t changed. However, I’d never actually tried using VueScan So just for the hell of it, I downloaded the trial version yesterday, and lo and behold, it not only recognized the LiDE-80, but did previews & scans, including 35mm film scans using the scanner’s special Film Adapter Unit. Only limitation vs.
The native driver from long ago seems to be that max resolution is 1200dpi rather than 4800×2400. I contacted the developer, Ed Hamrick, and he got back to me saying that he doesn’t plan to officially support the scanner )-: I’m not sure I’m going to buy VueScan: The “Pro” version I’d need to support film scanning is US$80, which is a bit steep if support isn’t official. However, I do urge people who haven’t found another solution to try VueScan even if it claims their scanner isn’t supported — it may work, and that may be a solution for them (standard version is $40). Morris: Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you yet. I found info that the PacificImage Electronics (PIE) PrimeFilm 1800u scanner is the same as the Microtek FilmScan 35.
Jeffrey, If your scanner is indeed the same as the Microtek FilmScan 35 as MacManus found, I would also try VueScan. I also have a Canon scanner that only has a PowerPC driver that works up to 10.6; while VueScan’s support pages said it wouldn’t work in OS X 10.6, it works very well in 10.8, including film scanning (see the comment thread just above this one). This is VueScan’s page on the MicroTek: VueScan has a free trial, so it doesn’t hurt anything to try. If you still have access to your 10.6 system, try VueScan on it as well as a basis for comparison.
@Polli: Thanks for the feedback! Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you (yet). Did you try (re)installing TWAINbridge.app? see directions in original post And did you try just unplugging and replugging the LiDE50’s USB-cable? Running the First Aid function in OSX’s Disk Utility app followed by restarting your Mac might also help.
Resetting the NVRAM (PRAM) might also help: shut down your Mac, then restart while pressing the CMD+ALT+P+R key-combo If none of the above helps, contact SANE for OSX’s developer Mattias Ellert and ask him see directions in original post Good Luck! @Greger: Sorry to hear it doesn’t work for you yet. Most of the time, it will work if you just redo from start and install again. The answer to your uninstall-question is at the bottom of the original post: quote If you want to un-install the TWAIN SANE drivers, either use an un-installer application like AppCleaner or follow the instructions for manual un-install as outlined in Mattias Ellert’s FAQ (last question & answer).

I just upgraded to Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan), and it promptly rendered a number of pieces of software (all non-Apple) useless. One of them was the driver and interface for my Canon scanner. Canon (and it would appear, a number of companies) were caught flat-footed by the upgrade.
Unfortunately, all I can do is wait for them to catch up. In the meantime, I was looking for an alternative, and the scanner utility itself WILL scan using. I think, Mac's built-in ImageCapture. However, even set to the highest settings - billions of colors at 600 dpi - it spits out really bad images - all pixelated and grainy.
See here - (large file.) Any ideas? I am dead in the water.
I had the same problem, using a Canon LIDE 210 scanner. What solved the problem in the end was to remove everything related to the scanner from my computer, including the MP Navigator software and all other Canon utilities that came with the scanner when I bought it. I then went to the Canon support site and downloaded everything (driver, MP Navigator and Quick Menu) anew. The Quick Menu looks quite different now, but the scanner works again. The only thing that I didn't get to work is the buttons at the scanner so I have to start the scan by using the Quick Manu - not much of a problem for me. There is one problem remaining though: Apparently the driver cannot be used to scan text and images without resetting something.
The workaround is to start Image Capture and choose Reset TWAIN devices under the File menu. This is described in the FAQ on the Canon support site and seems to be an issue with the Canon driver. I hope, Canon will fix this in the future, so it may be worth to keep an eye on driver updates. Or, maybe Apple will provide something. Vuescan 9.5.27 will work if you select Color media and leave the input bits per pixel set at Auto.
You can set the output bits per pixel to whatever you like, from 1-bit B&W to 64-bit RGBI. This is in Professional mode with Vuescan Pro. The company - probably just one guy - just changed their UI a few versions ago and the new UI is confusing. The user guide hasn't been updated as far as I can tell. When things are in a stable state Vuescan is an excellent program, but the guy is probably pulling his hair out after Win 10 and El Capitan hit at the same time.
'Get a new scanner with compatible drivers' is rude, useless, and uncalled for. I had the same problem, using a Canon LIDE 210 scanner. What solved the problem in the end was to remove everything related to the scanner from my computer, including the MP Navigator software and all other Canon utilities that came with the scanner when I bought it. Having an issue with scanning a PDF, 90% of my use.
Tried your suggestion of launching Image Capture and resetting Twain devices. Upon doing so. Image Capture saw my scanner.
When pressing the scan button in the Canon software got a dialog box indicating that scanner was set to Image Scan do I want to use twain. Said yes and then scanner just hung. Still playing around. Interesting note. Canons web site has El Capitan listed as an OS without any drivers or files associated with the OS. Had to use Yosemite drivers and software. Apple Footer.
